Coincident discharge of two presynaptic neurons within 5 ms was more effective than the sum of the effects of nonsynchronous spikes (Fig. 7a)... In contrast, spike occurrences of more than one neuron in time windows >10 ms showed only a linear additive effect

41 satellites, 40 with at least 20 two-partner events; 15 (38%) supralinear; median excess 0.0145 for one partner and 0.0197 for two; Wilcoxon p = 0.993. Two coincident partners transmit more than one, but less than twice as much. With 20 ms events, 29% supralinear (p = 0.998). The criterion's measure is biased towards sublinear (on synthetic satellites with linear summation it gives -0.0278, s.d. 0.0030). A variant against a linear prediction from each partner's one-spike events, with the response window from the first spike to the last, is unbiased there (0.0016, s.d. 0.0046) and detects supralinear input (0.198); on the data 4 of 40 satellites (10%) are above the linear prediction (median 0.0015 against 0.0239, p = 1), and 12 of 40 (30%) with 20 ms events. That variant's local baseline is biased on the data, as the post rate in the flanks is higher around two-partner events than one-partner events (median 9.44 against 7.26 Hz, 28 of 40 satellites, Wilcoxon p = 0.00022). With the post unit's mean rate as baseline (unbiased on synthetic satellites, -0.0021, s.d. 0.0068), the two-partner response is 0.0135 against a prediction of 0.0337, above it in 9 of 40 (22%), below it by Wilcoxon p = 0.00058; that baseline leaves in more background for two-partner events (median 0.0125 against 0.0074), which favours a supralinear result. No measure finds supralinear summation, and with both baselines the two-partner response is below the one-partner response (0.0135 against 0.0180 with the global one), which these measures do not explain. The paper had 14 satellites converging on interneurons; here any target with two excitatory partners is used, and its definitions of satellite and transmission probability are in the supplementary information, which was not available.
